But as it is often symptomless during the initial stages, it is very important to receive a thorough check when you visit the practice. There are two types of gum disease, including gingivitis and periodontal disease.
Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease. It typically includes the formation of red and swollen gums, as well as gums that bleed when brushing teeth.
Periodontal disease is when gingivitis is allowed to progress, and the disease has affected a large portion of the surrounding gum tissue and then the actual jawbone. As periodontal disease progresses teeth become loose and the jaw begins to ache, with many teeth lost if the disease remains untreated.
Gum disease occurs when bacteria are able to enter the teeth and gums, where it spreads and causes damage. Plaque is the main cause as it is able to coat and cover both the teeth and gums thoroughly. If left on the teeth and gums, the bacteria in the plaque progresses into the gums. It is always vital to remove any damaging material when brushing, flossing and using mouthwash.
Gum disease can spread quickly and painlessly, but there are a few signs that can indicate if you are suffering from the condition:
Coming to the practice for routine check-ups can help us to spot the signs of gum disease and treat them quickly and effectively. We provide scale and polishing treatments to boost the health of your mouth, and periodontal cleaning for patients where gum disease has already taken hold.
